Ski season in Durango is a gift and a little bit of a grind on your face. The light at this elevation is bright even when the air hurts your teeth. Wind on the lift finds every inch the neck gaiter missed. By February a lot of regulars walk in with the same trio: a goggle stripe, cheeks that sting in the shower, and spots that were faint in October and loud by March.

That is ski-season skin. It is not a character flaw, and it is not fixed with one richer moisturizer, though your moisturizer is still invited. The pigment and the rough, dull surface are the part we can actually treat once the season, or a break in it, gives your skin a chance to heal.

What the mountain does to a face

Two things happen at once, and they are easy to mix up.

The sun at altitude reaches you on clear days, cloudy days, and days you only meant to be outside for the parking lot. Pigment that has been quietly collecting all year can step forward. Redness that was a little flush in town can look angry after a windy afternoon.

The wind and the dry air do the other job. They chap, they sting, and they make texture feel worse than it looks in a bathroom mirror. A balm helps the sting. It does not lift a sun spot, and it does not change pore texture or fine lines.

If you want the summer version of this conversation, we already wrote high-altitude sun, high-stakes skin. This one is about the months when the jacket is on and the face is still taking the weather.

Halo for the texture you can feel

Halo, performed by Dr. Brian Rike, DO, improves pigmentation and sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles that are not deep, texture, tone, and smoothness. It typically shrinks the look of pores. For a ski face, that usually means the rough cheeks, the dull forehead, and the fine lines that goggles and squinting have been rehearsing.

Halo downtime is 5–10 days depending on the treatment. Plan it for a stretch when you can skip a powder day. The Halo downtime and results page walks through bronzing, peeling, and the weeks after. Pricing starts at $1,500 for Halo. The face package is $2,200 and adds BBL HERO on the same visit. Neck and chest is $1,000 more. Details are on the Halo laser cost page.

Winter is a kinder time to do this than a June trip to the desert. We still want a hat and sunscreen on the way to the mountain. We just have more shade built into the season. More on that timing is in why winter is laser season in Durango.

BBL HERO for the color the sun left

BBL HERO is broadband light for sun damage, pigment, and redness. The face visit is $550–$600. Dr. Rike performs BBL HERO, including the corrective work. People sometimes search BBL HEROic. BBL HERO is as effective as BBL HEROic. It uses the same light energy, and sessions just take a little longer.

After BBL HERO, treated pigment can darken and then flake. Redness often fades within hours. It is a different recovery from Halo, and it is still a recovery. If you have a close-up photo day, read BBL HERO results before you assume you will look untouched the next morning.

Andrea Rike performs BBL BARE and Forever Young BBL. Forever Young BBL is the maintenance photofacial, not the corrective BBL HERO visit. If your spots are loud, you start with Dr. Rike. If your skin is already in a good place and you want to keep it there between ski seasons, Forever Young BBL with Andrea is the upkeep conversation.

A practical ski-season rhythm

On the hill, the unfancy habits still matter. Sunscreen on the face, ears, and the little gap under the goggles. A balm before the wind gets there. A hat in town, because the parking-lot sun counts.

In the clinic, the rhythm we talk through is simple. BBL HERO when color and redness are the main complaint and you want a visit with a lighter social recovery. Halo, or the $2,200 face package, when texture, fine lines, and pigment need the same season. Dr. Rike decides which one with your skin in front of him, not from a photo you took in the lodge.

If this winter is already booked with races and houseguests, say that. A January or February opening is often kinder than squeezing Halo between two storm cycles.

Book around your ski days

Book on Vagaro at vagaro.com/rmedspa or through our book page. The $25 deposit holds the visit and applies toward a treatment or package. Call (970) 501-0610 if you want to talk through a storm week before you commit.

Tell us which days you refuse to miss on the mountain. We will put Halo or BBL HERO on the other days.

Individual results vary. This is general education, not a personal treatment plan.
